Free live World Cup screenings? Multimedia minister says he’s down with it

Prime Minister Mahathir’s first three weeks in office are proving to sate the populists among us asking for economic relief: First, the lowering of GST from 6% to 0%, and now the Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo is suggesting that the national television broadcaster RTM may provide a live telecast of this year’s World Cup.

The football tournament begins June 14.

Speaking to Bernama, he added that he is in support of the proposed plan, as it will allow more Malaysians to enjoy the matches (Populism is essentially, saying just what we want to hear, and agreeing with us when you say otherwise, isn’t it?). It will also allow for the national broadcaster to increase their revenues via advertiser dollars.

The issue will be raised at this Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, so don’t buy those Astro cable World Cup packages just yet!
