Freak storm wreaks havoc in Penang

Several areas in Penang were affected when a freak storm hit the little island on Wednesday night.

According to The Star Online, among the worst hit areas were Bayan Lepas, Sungai Nibong, Sungai Dua and Batu Uban, where trees were uprooted at several places.

On the mainland, strong winds swept through Jalan Ong Yi How, Jalan Raja Uda, Teluk Ayer Tawar, Mak Mandin, Sungai Lembu, Permatang Rawa and Kebun Sireh, also causing trees to fall.

Thankfully, no casualties were reported.

The storm also caused damage to a few cars and motorcycles parked in the compound of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), when a huge tree fell on top of the vehicles.

A first-year postgraduate student at the university, Mohd Hafiz Ahmad, told The Star Online that he regretted not moving his car earlier from the carpark.

“It was windy and I sensed something bad was about to happen. I already had the key with me but before I could reach my car, a huge tree fell on it,” he said.
