Former Mufti of Perlis delivers sick burn on #chocolategate, goes viral

Former Mufti of Perlis and prominent Islamic talking head Dato’ Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin – better known as Dr MAZA – has posted a scathing rebuttal to the vitriol being put out by several Malay-Muslim NGOs on the case of the porcine DNA-tainted Cadbury chocolate bars.

On his official Facebook page, Dr MAZA specifically addresses the lamentation from outraged quarters that comsuming porcine-tainted chocolate meant that Muslims would need to cleanse themselves of the contamination. And true to form, his post went viral, with more than 7,000 Likes, 2,000 Shares and almost 500 comments.

We won’t get into the fine details, but long story short: he says it’s not that complicated. If Muslims want to be free of pig DNA after eating a Cadbury chocolate bar, the cleansing process is simple and Islam is flexible and tolerant towards the issue – the main objective is to just get clean.

He saved his trademark acerbic with for the end of his post, however. For the benefit of our BM-illiterate readers, his closing argument is translated below:

“The opinion that one would need to cleanse one’s mouth with water mixed with dirt after accidentally consuming something haram reflects a warped mind. No Muslims, even in the time of the Holy Prophet, were commanded to rinse their mouths with watery mud, despite the fact that they were all converted to Islam, and had therefore eaten and drank haram food previously.

“Meanwhile, the notion that one would need to replace one’s blood [after eating porcine DNA-tainted chocolate] is just a case of infinite ignorance.”
