Azran Osman Rani, former AirAsia X and iflix CEO, was involved in a serious cycling accident yesterday along Jalan Duta.

The incident occurred at 8:55am, and saw the 47-year-old thrown from his bike as the vehicle hit him from behind. Initial images from the scene show Azran, who left corporate life in 2017 to found his own health-based start-up, on the ground surrounded by blood.

Naluri Hidup, the enterprise that Azran founded, focuses on using digital health technology, data science, behavioral psychology and localized knowledge to offer users help in developing healthy, long-lasting lifestyle habits. It launched earlier this year.

A 20-year-old student was driving the vehicle, and police say that they were making a left turn and failed to notice the cyclist, despite clear conditions.

The victim sustained injuries to his head, as well as his left hand, and is currently in Hospital Kuala Lumpur for treatment.

Cycling in Kuala Lumpur is not for the faint of heart, and not even the city’s central-business district bike lanes guarantee smooth sailing, as many drivers are not familiar with laws protecting cyclists.

No further news has been given regarding Azran’s condition at this time, and we here at Coconuts KL are sending all of our best wishes that he recovers from this tragic accident.
