The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has hauled up 39 Nepalese workers following yesterday’s factory worker strike which resulted in a riot and a burned down factory building in Kulaijaya, Johor last night.
Kulaijaya OCDP deputy chief Supt Mohad Idris Samsuri told The Star Online that the workers were arrested after they set fire to the JCY HDD Technology Sdn Bhd electronics manufacturing plant situated along Jalan Gangsa at the Kelapa Sawit Industrial Area last night.
At the time of the PDRM action, he said some 1,000 workers had gathered outside the factory compound. As the police moved to arrest the perpetrators, only half of the crowd dispersed.
“Some 60% of those who gathered there were Nepalese nationals and the 39 were arrested after they turned violent and refused to listen to the police when told to leave the area,” he said.
Earlier yesterday, the striking workers, mostly Nepalese nationals, had gathered outside the company’s offices, throwing rocks and burning down a car inside the compound, prompting Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) and Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) officers to swoop in to contain the situation.
The protesting mob also damaged three other blocks owned by the company.
Last Thursday, more than 1,000 foreign workers also staged a mass protest at another JCY HDD plant at Johor Bahru’s Tebrau IV Inidsutrial Area, following the death of a Nepalese worker.
