A local Foodpanda delivery rider and his friend caused a disturbance at a store in Penang recently after the rider became upset about being replaced by another rider for a delayed order.
In CCTV footage of the incident that has gone viral on social media, the two riders are seen entering Fumi Honey House to discuss the order with the staff.
The store took to Facebook to state that they had been waiting for their order for 30 minutes. When the initial rider did not show up, they informed the Foodpanda system, and a new rider was arranged for delivery.
However, after 45 minutes, the original rider appeared with a friend and proceeded to argue with the staff about being replaced. The situation escalated quickly, and the rider threw a beverage at a female employee, causing her to cry out of fear.
In addition to the beverage, the rider threw a menu book at the female staff member and dared the staff to call the police. However, her colleague spoke up, expressing that his behavior was intolerable. The rider even went so far as to threaten the staff, claiming that his house was located just behind the store.
Fumi Honey House clarified that they were not authorized to replace delivery riders and were only concerned about customer complaints due to the delay.
Yesterday, Seberang Perak Selatan acting police chief Mohd Norazmi Abd Ghapar said they had arrested the delivery driver.
He said that police discovered a video clip of the April 4 incident, lasting one minute and twenty seconds, on an account believed to belong to the restaurant owner, before conducting further investigations.
He said that police also received a report of the incident. The man was subsequently arrested and remanded to assist in the investigation under Section 352 of the Penal Code. Those found guilty under that law, which covers assaults and the use of criminal force in provocation, can be punished with up to three months in prison and/or a fine of up to 1,000 ringgits.
“Based on the video clip, it was found that two men, believed to be food delivery men, entered the restaurant, with one of them throwing food and beverage packages at two female employees at the counter,” he said in a statement yesterday.
