In the Sessions Court yesterday (April 19), food delivery rider, Azril Kamarunzaman, pleaded not guilty to charges of causing mischief and burning 11 motorcycles and four electric scooters in the parking area of Suria KLCC shopping mall on April 13.

Azril has been charged under Section 435 of the Penal Code, which can result in a 14-year jail term and a fine.

During the proceedings, Judge Datuk Nu’aman Mahmud Zuhudi granted bail of RM5,000 with one surety, and the court has scheduled May 22 for mention.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Wan Nurul Amalina Abu Hanifah acted for the prosecution, and Muhamad Ridzuan Umar represented Azril.

Initially, the bail was set at RM12,000, but Azril’s lawyer successfully argued that his client needs to support his wife and parents, which led to a reduction in the amount.

On April 13, around 3:30pm, someone set fire to 13 motorcycles and four electric scooters near the Suria KLCC shopping mall, which went viral. Based on CCTV evidence, a 34-year-old man was arrested near the scene of the crime, which led to Azril’s arrest.

Beam, the e-scooter company, confirmed that none of its electric vehicles was responsible for the fire and was relieved that no one was hurt.
