Recently, due to a lack of spare parts, its sister company, AirAsia X used vinyl tape on the armrests of several seats on its planes, according to Alvin Tan, the company’s head of engineering.

Tan assured the public yesterday in a statement issued by the company’s public relations officer that the matter was not a safety issue.

“Due to the shortage of spare parts affecting operators worldwide and taking into account that this is not a safety issue, the vinyl tape – which is commonly used for cosmetic cabin repairs – was used as a temporary measure to prevent flight disruptions and to prioritize getting our guests to their destinations safely and timely.

“Spare parts orders placed in August 2022 arrived last week and repair work is currently ongoing to fix all of the armrests.”

Tan was commenting on a social media post that went viral on Feb. 20 and showed vinyl tape being used on the armrests of a Taipei-Kuala Lumpur flight.

The passenger also hinted that the incident was embarrassing for Malaysia.

However, the public relations representative also mentioned that there is a shortage of spare parts at other airlines besides AirAsia X.

Meanwhile, social media users called out the user for being unnecessarily picky when he was flying a low-cost airline and also for irresponsible passengers for being destructive.
