Flash floods in KL: City Hall looking into flood-mitigation proposal

The KL City Hall (DBKL) is looking into ways to resolve flash floods after last night’s thunderstorm swamped parts of the city, paralysing traffic.

The Star Online’s Qishin Tariq reports that DBKL was looking into a proposal to install a pipe, which would connect to a storm drain and disperse flood waters onto Jalan Klang Lama or Jalan Kuchai Lama.

“The flooding was not as bad before. We have been asking Alam Flora to clear the drains here of sand,” DBKL Civil Engineering and Urban Transportation Department officer Roshasnida Mohamed was quoted as saying.

Flash floods were previously reported on April 28, 30 and May 2.

“The May 2 flood was the worst. Water reached up to the traders’ tables, about one metre high,” Seputeh Barisan Nasional public service bureau chief Pang Kin Cheong told The Star.

The entire city of Kuala Lumpur were at a standstill on Thursday night after heavy downpour caused flash floods in several major roads.

The heavy rainfall which started in the evening has caused Bangsar, Jalan Duta and Jalan Ampang to experience bad flash floods since 7.30pm. The flash flood was so bad at several spots, drivers were forced to abandon their submerged cars and head to higher ground as a safety precaution.
