Fishermen in Pulau Ketam are getting increasingly anxious with the mysterious mass appearance of red jellyfish.
According to a report by The Star Online today, the red jellyfish invasion began two weeks ago.
“There were so many that I could see them floating in the water. I could even see them from my home. We started seeing them about two weeks ago and now there are more. When the tide is low, the beach becomes very red,” fisherman Ong Ah Soi, 54 was quoted as saying.
Ong told the portal that while some wondered if the appearance of red jellyfish was a sign of ‘impending disaster’, others were just peeved about having to separate them from their daily catch.
The president of Malaysia’s Fish Traders Association, Kee Oi Sing was quoted in the same report as saying that such a phenomenon is not out of the ordinary.
“We came across the same thing before this. It is a seasonal phenomenon and people need not be too worried,” The Star Online quoted him as saying.
What could it be? We can’t tell, but it might be a good idea to avoid any attempt at wading in waters around the area.
