Firemen rescue little girl whose leg got stuck in a metal grill

It was a harrowing experience for a four-year-old girl when her leg got stuck in a metal grill drain cover on Monday.

According to The New Straits Times, the incident took place along Jalan Raja Nong Kiri in Klang at around 8am when the girl stepped on the drain cover while walking with her parents after having breakfast.

The girl’s right leg reportedly slipped through the metal grill gap, pinning her up to her thigh.

When the parents failed to free the girl’s leg, they reportedly made a distress call to the Kota Raja Fire and Rescue Department.

Rescue operation head Mohd Shafiee Rawop told the daily that six firemen, armed with a hydraulic spreader, rushed to the scene.

“The traumatised girl was crying badly when we arrived, even more so when she saw the equipment we brought along to create a gap on the metal grill. She was very afraid that something would happen to her leg.

“So we used distraction tactics to avert her attention on her stuck leg. We also comforted her by saying we were here to save her and told her not be scared. She calmed down shortly after that with assuring words from her parents.

“We did not want to scare her further, so as we were using the hydraulic spread to widen the gap between the metal grill, we covered her leg with a piece of cloth so that she would not see how it was being done.

“The operations was successful and it was over in 15 minutes. The girl sustained light injuries and was brought to the clinic for treatment,” Shafiee was quoted as saying.
