Fines for not separating garbage begins today

It is June 1 and if you’re living in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Pahang, Johor, Malacca, Negeri Sembilan, Perlis and Kedah don’t be surprised — a maximum RM1,000 compound comes into effect from today if you repeatedly fail to separate your garbage.

The New Straits Times reports that checks have kicked off in Kedah, with the inspection of 2,737 houses in 10 residential areas in the northern state.

According to state Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) director Fadzilah Hasan, 58 personnel were part of this morning’s enforcement rounds, which involved inspection of garbage bins.

“If they fail to do so, we will issue notice of which they are given seven days to reply,” she was quoted as saying.

Residents of landed properties who fail to comply can be fined RM50 for the first offence, RM100 the second time and RM500 for the third offence.

For those living in non-landed property, the fines are RM100, RM200, RM500.

The waste separation programme was introduced in September last year, but penalties would only take effect beginning today.

Repeat offenders will face a maximum compound of RM1,000 under the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672).
