Selangor Immigration authorities reported that a raid yesterday on a popular Petaling Jaya entertainment center turned up 35 illegal workers, one of them a 15-year-old teenage girl.

Director Mohamad Shukri Nawi elaborated, saying that the raids began at 11pm at night, after the investigations into the center’s operations led authorities to conclude that they were providing “immoral services to its customers.”

According to Malay-language daily Kosmo!, individuals detained included 26 women, including the under-aged girl, and nine men, from countries that included Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, China and Bangladesh.

Most disturbing? Officials say that their initial finding point to all of the women, including the teenager, working as guest relation officers (GROs) at the center.

Regionally, the term is used to describe bar, nightclub, and entertainment center workers, who are mostly women. Job duties range from chatting and dancing with punters, to ensuring that guests are well-inebriated (and spending money), to in some cases, prostitution.
