Felda settlers encounter a ‘big cat’, only to realise later that it was an even bigger cat

A group of residents at Felda Kota Gelanggi 3 in Jerantut initially thought the animal resting underneath a house was a really large cat…until they realised it wasn’t.

According to The Star Online, the drama unfolded at 7.30 am on Monday when one of the settler’s neighbours spotted the animal.

Felda settler Ramli Othman, 60, told the news portal that he along with a few others went to investigate with flashlights as the area under the house was very dark.

Ramli said he initially thought it was a big cat…until it let out a defeaning roar.

It turns out the ‘big cat’ was actually a clouded leopard.

“When my friends and I went to have a closer look, we were shocked to see that it was a leopard. We ran away to avoid being attacked,” said Ramli, 60.

“I told my children to hide inside the house in case the animal went wild. Luckily, that did not happen,” he was quoted by the news portal as saying.

Ramli then reportedly alerted the Civil Defence Department and Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan), who arrived at the scene at around 9.30am.

The Perhilitan rangers caught the clouded leopard, or harimau dahan, using tranquiliser darts before bringing it to the Kuala Krau wildlife reserve in Jenderak, Temerloh.
