Federal Territories Ministry: soup kitchen guidelines to be announced in two weeks

After Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s visit to a soup kitchen feeding KL’s poor and homeless last night, the Federal Territories Ministry seems to be taking a milder stand on the position of NGOs operating soup kitchens.

Deputy Federal Territories Minister Datuk Dr Loga Bala Mohan said his ministry will be announcing new guidelines for mobile soup kitchens operating in the city in two weeks’ time.

He said the purpose of drafting up guidelines for the mobile soup kitchens, which usually operate out of lorries, vans and other vehicles, was to ensure that operators observed cleanliness in distributing food to the city’s poor.

Bernama reports that Loga said the FT Ministry might suggest certain locations for mobile soup kitchens to operate, such as community halls at Public Housing Projects in the city.

“We may find them places to distribute (the free food). We don’t want (Kuala Lumpur) to look like a city of beggars where they even approach cars to beg for alms,” he added.
