FBI not participating in MH370 investigation; other US agencies on their way to KL

Although local authorities are welcoming all the help they can get to investigate the case of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has not sent over its representatives to Kuala Lumpur, despite rumours to the contrary. However, according to a senior US law enforcement official, representatives from other US agencies and aircraft manufacturer Boeing are expected to arrive today.

Thus far, Malaysia has not requested assistance from the FBI or the US Department of Homeland Security, and those agencies have accordingly not sent any investigators our way, according to a second official. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject.

The FBI and other US law enforcement agencies have offered their assistance, as they have the forensic and analytical tools and criminal investigation exerptise that could benefit the ongoing probe into MH370’s disappearance.

Because no wreckage has yet been found, no legal jurisdiction for the crash has been determined, and no government or agency is formally in charge.

On Satruday, a small team of experts from the US National Transportation Safety Board, Federal Aviation Administratio and Boeing departed for Kuala Lumpur and are expected to arrive today. This team was also not formally invited to participate in investigation efforts, because no authority has taken charge of the investigation.
