Faulty brakes caused out-of-control bus to ram into 10 vehicles

Yesterday’s shocking out-of-control bus incident near the Menora Tunnel along the North-South Expressway was caused by faulty brakes.

The Star Online reports that investigation into the incident — in which a runaway bus sped along a curve before ramming into 10 vehicles — showed that the bus experienced technical problems as it travelled down a slope towards the crash site.

“The brakes weren’t functioning well. As a result, the bus headed down the slope at high speed and rammed into 10 other cars in front,” Ipoh OCPD Assistant Commissioner Sum Chang Keong was quoted as saying.

According to ACP Sum, the bus driver’s urine test for drugs returned negative.

Meanwhile, Astro Awani reports that the bus driver had nine traffic summonses issued to him for various offences between 2011 and 2015, while the bus company had been issued with 63 summonses.

At least two people were injured in the 2.45pm incident yesterday, which reportedly caused a massive traffic jam from the Kuala Kangsar exit to Jelapang, and from Bukit Gantang to Bukit Berapit.
