A family spat over life insurance money is believed to be the cause of a fracas in Georgetown, Penang last night that left a 35-year-old victim scalded by boiling water.

According to a police report lodged on the matter, the victim alleges that his own father threw the water over him when he went to his house Tuesday evening to ask for his share of a policy that his mother had taken out before she passed away in 2005. When the policy matured, the suspect claimed it and shared it among his children, but failed to give his 35-year-old son his share.

Alleging that he had repeatedly asked his father for his portion, believed to be around RM30,000 (US$7,220), he finally went to his house earlier this week, at 6:30pm to resolve the matter.

However, he claims that his father continued to deny him his portion, and instead threw boiling hot water on the victim when he entered the family home. Bizarrely, this was the second time that the father has been accused of scalding his son with boiling water. When asked by investigators what had happened, the 66-year-old father confirmed that he had, in fact, committed the offense.

While the suspect is currently out on bail, investigators continue to make sense of the incident.
