Legally beleaguered actor Farid Kamil, known for his cinematic tough-guy turns, polo playing and most recently, slapping a police officer while in a police station, appeared in court today to plead not guilty to the charge of drug abuse.
He also posted to Instagram, referring to himself as a persecuted person, and vowed to continue to fight the good fight for all of those under duress.
For those of us trying to understand what that could possibly mean, it might be of interest to note that Farid has been a vocal supporter of Opposition candidate for PM, Dr Tun M Mahathir. No possible motives for the so-called persecution have been drawn, but you know – we thought we should just mention that.
His widely publicized arrest occurred January 11, when after heading to the station to file an accident report, he lashed out at an on-duty officer, as well as assaulting a civilian.
Police say that instead of answering question regarding the accident, the actor instead showed them a mobile phone message that referred to 300 artistes owing loan sharks money due to lack of jobs. Urine tests came up positive for marijuana.
However, Farid is contending all of the charges against him, and pleading not guilty. He currently faces not just the drugs charge, but four other charges that have been filed against him, including the officer assault, the civilian altercation, obstruction of police duties, as well as the good old disorderly conduct.
For now, he has been released on bail of RM3,000, and his passport has been confiscated by the court.
His wife, popular actress Diana Danielle, has made several posts on social media pledging to stand by her man.
If Farid’s Instagram post yesterday is anything to go by, then we certainly haven’t heard the last of this.
