Family dog protects household from 20-foot python, dies from injuries

One Sarawak family of four believes that man’s best friend made the ultimate sacrifice, with their pet dog putting himself in the line of fire with a 20-foot python in order to save them from a possible attack.

Having called for the dog earlier that afternoon, the family noticed that the dog did not respond as per usual. When they went to investigate, they found their beloved pet in the tight grip of an adult python: It was already too late, the dog’s body was limp and lifeless.

“We’re devastated over our dog, but we owe him our lives. If it wasn’t because of him, the snake might have entered our house,” said the unnamed family member.

One family member spoke to media, telling them that they managed to hit the reptile, and at that point the python released the dog’s body and disappeared into a nearby hole. At that point, the family contact the local Fire and Rescue Department, who arrived on the scene with nine firefighters. After an hour, the snack was caught. Reportedly aggressive, officials later measured the reptile, who clocked in at six meters long, and 16cm wide.
