Extended burn: Marina Mahathir thinks Dyana Sofya’s got skillz

It might be due to their common ground as children of UMNO families who’ve gone on to see the world in a light decidedly different from the Malay-centric ruling party, or it could be a demonstration of feminist solidarity, but Marina Mahathir seems to admire and support Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud’s political aspirations.

In a Facebook post on Monday, the daughter of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad linked to an essay written by Dyana Sofya, daughter of an UMNO member now contesting the Teluk Intan by-election as a DAP candidate, rebutting the statements made by UMNO supreme council member Datuk Razali Ibrahim on the pro-bumiputera policies of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), of which Dyana is an alum.

Marina’s comment:

Very smart girl this…she can think, she can articulate, she can write. That’s three up from most politicians already.

Feel the burn.

Further down in the comments for the Facebook post, Marina asks: “… why are people so against her because she is young? Najib Razak was 26 when he first became a Minister. Dyana’s 27 and only vieing for a Parliamentary seat. We should have more young people for the fresh young ideas they bring.”

Dyana Sofya and Marina Mahathir were further linked in the media today by Dyana’s mother, Yammy Samat, when she said, possibly as a snide response to Dr Mahathir’s disparaging comments on her daughter, “I tried my very best to bring up Dyana to be like Mukhriz, but when she grew up, she turned out to be like Marina.”

The statement was a reference to the difference between two of Dr Mahathir’s children, one of whom kept within UMNO traditions and is now Kedah Menteri Besar, and another who chose her own path and is now seen to be a liberal supporter of causes that UMNO and the BN government deems unsavoury or even illegal.

“So it doesn’t matter. She became like one of Tun’s children anyway,” the 59-year-old added, in her message to the former prime minister.
