Khairuddin Abu Hassan, the former Batu Kawan UMNO division deputy chief who was arrested last Friday for lodging reports against sovereign investment fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) to foreign law enforcement agencies, was rearrested immediately after being released from remand today.
His arrest this time was under the Special Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) for acts of sabotage.
Khairuddin’s attorney, Matthias Chan (who once served as former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s political secretary) told Astro Awani‘s Sathesh Raj that Khairuddin was now charged under Sections 124K and 124L of the Penal Code.
Last Friday, Khairuddin was arrested and placed under a six-day remand order under the charge of violating Section 124C, for attempting to jeopardise parliamentary democracy. Prior to his arrest, Khairuddin and Chan were barred from leaving the country by the Immigration Department.
Khairuddin had lodged several reports on 1MDB to law enforcement agencies in the UK, the United States, Switzerland, France, and Hong Kong. He was allegedly on his way to provide information on 1MDB and Prime Minister Najib Razak to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) before his arrest.
Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar termed Khairuddin’s decision to report the 1MDB case to foreign law enforcement as an attempt to circumvent and disrespect the Malaysian legal system.
