Having trouble getting your car to start in the morning? You might have bought a fake set of spark plugs from this spare parts dealer.
The Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs (KPDNKK) carried out a raid yesterday on an auto spare parts dealership in Taman Samudera, Batu Caves yesterday, seizing about 44,000 counterfeit spark plugs valued at around RM135,000.
Selangor KPDNKK chief enforcement officer Abdul Rosik Yakub told Sinar Harian that his ministry’s task force acted on a tip-off from the original manufacturer of the branded spark plugs, who had lodged a formal complaint on the matter.
He added that apart from the seizures, the shop’s owner stands to be fined a maximum RM15,000 for each article of counterfeit product found on his premises.
Let’s do the math on that: RM15,000 times 44,000 fake spark plugs … that’sa maximum fine of RM660 million. Hell of a fine.
“The shop has been operating for almost 10 years, and has been selling counterfeit items at the same retail price as the originals,” Abdul Rosik said.
“Our initial findings indicate that the counterfeit spare parts were procured from an overseas supplier. We are taking action against the retailer as a first-time offence.”
Still, we wouldn’t want to be the guy who might have to pony up more than half a billion ringgit in fines. Get a good lawyer, dude.
