Electronics store QMac is looking into accusations that one of its stores was discriminating against Indians by excluding people of that ethnicity from its recent job advertisement.
A representative from the Malaysian company told Coconuts today that they were aware of the incident and were planning to reach out to a man named Sharman Veraj, who opened up about being told off when seeking to work at the Setia City Mall outlet in Setia Alam, Selangor.
“We’ve contacted Sharman and we are doing our best to look into the matter,” Lee Soon Ming from QMac Setia City Mall said, adding: “We will apologize sincerely.”
Sharman, 18, had on Wednesday outed the company about its purported racism. He shared a photo of a job ad that hung outside the store, indicating that they were looking to hire “Malay or Chinese” individuals.
According to Sharman, an employee told him that they were “wary of Indians” after a former staffer of Indian ethnicity apparently stole cash worth RM10,000 (US$2,500) from the shop.
“It isn’t as if the Indian community already faces racism at such normalised levels, but now owners of shops are denying job opportunities to us as well,” Sharman wrote in a lengthy Instagram post, adding: “It has always been a dream to get my own income and yet I’m still seen as lesser in the eyes of racist individuals, such as the shop owner aforementioned.”
