Election Commission: Bukit Gelugor by-election May 25

Following the death of opposition icon Karpal Singh last week, the Election Commission (EC) has set the date for th Bukit Gelugor by-election to vote in Karpal’s successor in Parliament to May 25.

Nomination day for candidates has been set for May 12, and early voting is slated to take place on May 21.

EC Chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof told Bernama this by-election would use the 2012 electoral roll, which had already been combined with voter registration lists from all of 2013.

“Some 21 voting centres will be opened, including 17 for normal voting and the rest for early voting,” he told a media conference after chairing a special meeting relating to the vacant seat today.

In last year’s 13th General Election, Karpal Singh won the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary seat for DAP and Paktan Rakyat with a 41,778-vote majority over his Barisan Nasional opponent, Teh Beng Yeam. Karpal had held on to the Bukit Gelugor seat since 2004.
