Elderly woman’s daylight snatch theft goes viral, passerby does nothing to help

A shocking daylight robbery of a woman in Kota Baru, Kelantan, in the northeast of the country went viral yesterday afternoon, with clear CCTV footage of the entire incident.

The clip shows two men lurking near a parked car, with one in the driver’s seat and the other outside the vehicle. The time stamp on the clip reads 12:15pm.

With her hands full with shopping bags, the 72-year-old walks down the street, towards her car. Approaching the vehicle, one of the men suddenly grabs her from behind, pulling her handbag, and causing her to violently fall to the ground, hitting her head.

The suspect, wearing a black t-shirt, then jumps into the car driven by his accomplice, speeding off. The CCTV captured the vehicle license plates clearly, and the footage was quickly circulated online via Facebook page of bike tricks and bad drivers We Are Malaysians.

Specifying that the suspects’ vehicle was a Proton Persona with the license plate KCE 6775, police were able to arrest them within 24 hours. The two men are aged 27 and 33, with one having a record of previous offenses.

Alarmingly, the entire incident showed how cars in the wake of the incident either did nothing, or were not aware of what had just happened. A motorcyclist who witnessed the crime in its entirety stayed firmly on his bike, watching passively until the video cut out.

At one point, the woman tries to stand up, but falls again into the nearby open drain.

The elderly victim is reported to have sustained injuries to her head, and is currently at Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II.

People – really? This is the level of apathy we’re at? Elderly lady gets robbed and knocked-over, and no one does anything? Sigh.
