A 66-year old woman who was seen being allegedly beaten in an online video has come out refusing to press charges over the incident, claiming that the entire episode was merely “a joke”.
The 59-second video, which has gone viral on Malaysian social media circles, shows the elderly woman being slapped, kicked, and beaten with a belt by a group of youths in a flat, believed to have been in Cheras.
Cheras district police chief ACP Chong Kok Sin told Free Malaysia Today that following the release of the video, four women and a man have been detained by the PDRM.
“The victim’s granddaughter came forward to lodge a police report after seeing the video, fearing for her grandmother’s safety.
“She said that for the past three months, the victim was residing in the flat with her friends as she did not get along with her daughters-in-law.”
When police officers went to the apartment to investigate the matter, they found the elderly woman and 10 other individuals engaged in what seemed like a heated argument.
“We identified the individuals depicted in the video and took them to the Salak Selatan station for questioning,” said Chong.
The victim, who police say was drunk when the video was captured, did not sustain any lasting injuries from the incident.
“The complainant and the victim have since met to discuss the case, but the latter has refused to proceed with police investigations and has insisted on remaining at the flat,” Chong said.
“She apparently is comfortable living with the suspects who provide food and laundry services for her.”
