Elderly shop owner dead after thieves break-in via roof overnight, rob then bludgeon him

An elderly mini-market owner is dead after thieves broke into his Ipoh shop late last night via his zinc roof, and bludgeoned the 69-year-old to death.

Sem Ah Yem was found at 8:00am this morning, having suffered catastrophic head wounds while his limbs were tied. Police believe a blunt object was used. A metal pipe with blood stains on it has been taken to forensics for further investigation.

Ipoh’s Assistant Commissioner Mohd Ali Tamby told reporters that the incident is believed to have occurred between 10:00pm Monday night and early this morning. The victim had lived at the location for seven years. He added that police believe that the break-in and subsequent murder was carried out by a group of suspects.

He added that they left with RM80,000 (US$20,000) in cash, and left the scene the same way they came, via the roof.

Police are now hunting down suspects. In the meanwhile, social media has begun to pay respects to the shop owner.
