Elderly man’s ‘honest mistake’ causes car to crash into bank

One elderly man was probably just as shocked as the rest of the by-standers near a bank in Damansara Uptown when his Perodua Kelisa crashed into a bank there on Sunday evening.

The Star Online reports that the 70-year-old man crashed into a CIMB bank at Jalan SS 21/35 just after wrapping up a transaction at the ATM.

According to Petaling Jaya traffic police chief DSP Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif, the retired army officer had parked his car in front of the bank.

“However, he didn’t realise that he had put the car in drive and thought he was pressing the brake when he had actually hit the accelerator,” he told the daily.

The vehicle rammed into the walkway and crashed into the bank’s glass panels before hitting a wall at the back of the bank, the daily reported.

“There was no one in the bank at the time and there was no damage to the ATMs. He only hit a wooden booth that was next to the glass panels,” Mohamad Roy said adding that it was a ‘sincere mistake’.
