Ecstasy, I choose you: Pokémon is now a drug…literally!

When augmented reality game Pokémon GO was launched in Malaysia back in July, you could say the fans of the anime were hooked on it like a drug.

Now, there’s literally a drug that resembles a Pokeball.

Police in Georgetown, Penang reportedly seized more than RM410,000 worth of drugs in a series of raids last week, including ecstasy pills resembling Pokeballs.

(If you’re not familiar with Pokémon, a Pokeball is a red-and-white ball-shaped item used by players to catch and store monsters).

State Narcotics Department chief Supt Maidu Abu Bakar told The Star Online that this was the first time the police have come across ecstasy pills in that form.

Looks like someone wants to cash in on the whole Pokémon GO hype, eh?

According to Supt Maidu, the police arrested a 26-year-old man at the car park of a fast food restaurant in Bandar Baru Air Itam at around 2.30pm after allegedly finding four packets of syabu, two packets of ketamine and around 170 Ecstasy pills in his car.

The police also reportedly seized RM20,000 in cash, believed to be the day’s earnings from selling drugs.

The suspect then led the police to his house in Sungai Nibong, where they found eight packets of syabu, 1,700 Eramin 5 pills, 485 Ecstasy pills and two packets of ketamine.

The operation did not end there, though; the police then reportedly arrested a 23-year-old man near a luxury condominium in Jelutong for allegedly possessing two packets of drugs.

The man led the authorities to his condominium unit where 8,900 Eramin 5 pills and 3,672 Ecstasy pills were found in the living room.

Three of the suspect’s housemates were arrested, and the police also seized two cars and a motorcycle.

Supt Maidu told the news portal that all five suspects have been remanded until Thursday to facilitate investigations.
