Following the spread of the deadly Ebola virus in West African nations, Wisma Putra has announced that 24 Malaysians living and working in Liberia are being moved to nearby Ghana.
Wisma Putra consulate division secretary Datuk Zulkifli Yaacob said all 24 Malaysians were employees at a plantation owned by a Malaysian.
He said the order to get the Malaysians out of Liberia has been issued, and their transfer to Ghana is being conducted with the help of the Malaysian High Commission in Accra.
“All the 24 workers are expected to be moved tomorrow. However, it will depend on their visa application which is being handled by our high commission in Accra,” he told The Star Online yesterday.
The 24 workers would be temporarily based in Ghana until their parent company reaches a final decision as to what should be done.
Ebola has been spreading in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. With a fatality rate of almost 90%, more than 800 people have died of the disease out of 1,201 confirmed infections since February.
