Drug trafficker sentenced to death smiles as he receives sentence

A 27-year old farmer, sentenced to death by the Alor Setar High Court for trafficking 1.9 kilograms of cannabis, smiled as the sentence was meted out.

Fauzi Naim Muhamad Zaki of Taiping, Perak, appeared calm as the sentence was handed out, even managing to smile as he was led out of the dock.

The Star Online reports that he was arrested with the cannabis in his possession in Lunas, Kulim, on March 14, 2012.

Judicial Commissioner Datuk Mohd Zaki Abdul Wahab said in his judgment, “Fauzi claimed the drug found in his motorcycle basket belonged to his friend. After considering his statement of defence, I find that the accused’s statement cannot be trusted and failed to raise a doubt.”

Defence counsel Muhamad Azri Abdul Halim said Fauzi was only earning an income of RM700 a month at the time of his arrest, and that this was his first offence.
