Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has quit Umno as a sign of protest against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
The media today reported that former premier Dr Mahathir, 91, told a press conference that ‘Umno was no longer Umno’.
“It is a party dedicated to protecting Najib.I can’t be a member of such a party,” the Umno strongman was quoted as saying.
“I am very ashamed with what had happened,” the New Straits Times quoted him as saying at the Perdana Leadership Foundation this afternoon.
Last week, party deputy chief Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (pic) was suspended just months after he was sacked as deputy prime minister for his outspoken criticism over Najib’s involvement with debt-laden state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and the donation of RM2.6bil.

UMNO’s supreme council, the party’s top decision-making body, voted on Friday to suspend Muhyiddin from all his duties as deputy president until the next party polls in 2018.
