Doing It Wrong: 14 Cops test positive for drugs at integrity course

The last place one would expect to see people testing positive for drug abuse would be at an integrity course held by the Royal Malaysian Police, but there you are: when 100 police officers were tested at random duting one such program in Kuala Kangsar, 14 officers turned up positive for narcotics.

The Star reported yesterday that the 14 policemen are currently being investigated and disciplinary action will be be taken after a more comprehensive report is produced.

Perak state police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said the positive results were based on early urine tests conducted on Monday, a day after the start of  the week-long course. No actual drugs were found on the 14 policemen.

“The 14 policemen could have taken the drugs before participating in the course, as traces of it would remain in the body for a while,” The Star quoted SDCP Acryl Sani as saying.

“I don’t think they shared the drugs among themselves, but I believe that they had hidden the drugs and probably took them secretly,” he added.

Bukit Aman assistant chief of Inspector-General of Police secretariat ACP Datin Asmawati Ahmad said police were serious in combating all forms of wrongdoing by their personnel and would not hesitate taking action.

“Stern action, in accordance with the law, will be taken against policemen guilty of committing such offences,” said Asmawati.

“We are awaiting the results of the second urine tests. If they come out positive again, they will be charged under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.”

Asmawati assured the public that those found guilty will be punished accordingly.

“For Perak police to come out in the open shows how serious we are in upholding our integrity. The raids are an ongoing process to weed out personnel involved in criminal activities,” she said.

On Saturday. two policemen were arrested while high on methamphetamines in a drug raid in George Town. The two officers ahve been remanded pending investigations, and have been suspended from their posts.
