Do it for the children: Petronas has spent RM2.8 billion on student scholarships

They might not be your favourite ecologist’s BFF, but Petronas knows it’s important to teach the young’uns.

Bernama reports that national petrol company and general co-signer of Malaysia’s cheques Petronas has spent a total of RM2.8  billion through its Petronas Education Sponsorship Programme (PESP) on 21,000 students since the scholarship programme was established in 1975. That comes out to just over RM13,000 per student on average.

This year alone, Petronas received over 9,000 PESP applications from students who sat for their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exams in 2013. Out of the 9,000 applications, 316 have been selected to receive the scholarship based on merit.

Petronas human resource management senior vice-president Raiha Azni Abdul Rahman said Petronas is determined to make Malaysia the regional hub for education and learning in oil and gas, working through Petronas-owned educational institutions like Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), the Petronas Petroleum Technology Institute and the Petronas Leadership Centre, as well as through the Malaysian Maritime Academy.
