You know the economy is bad when a former minister and ex-member of parliament ends up taking a job at a local radio station.

Khairy Jamaluddin, better known as KJ, confirmed today that he will be joining Hot FM’s Bekpes Hot with radio announcers Johan, AG and AC Mizal.

“The offer to Khairy was made in an open letter on Instagram @hotfm976. He will be on duty as a radio announcer from 6am to 10am, Mondays to Fridays,” said a statement from Hot FM owner Media Prima Audio (MPA).

“Having him join Hot FM is in line with the radio station’s tagline ‘Yang Hangat Dan Terbaik’ (‘The Hottest And Best’).”

The 47-year-old, who held the Rembau parliamentary seat in Negeri Sembilan for three terms, sealed the end of his political career after he lost in the last general election in November. He was also recently sacked by his former party for being vocal against the leadership of Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Umno’s president.

Khairy’s presence at the radio station, according to MPA Chief Executive Officer Nazri Noran, will make it “fresher and more relevant” for listeners.

“Khairy is a strong social media influencer and his presence in Hot FM will give something different to listeners, as well as a new dimension to Malaysian radio stations. We are optimistic that it will attract more listeners to Hot FM.”

Hot FM network content director Shah Hayatudin said that Khairy had good ideas to “add colour” to Bekpes Hot, and will share hosting duties with Fara Fauzana and AG.

The former health minister has been lauded for his efforts in ensuring the success of Malaysia’s Covid-19 vaccination rollout, from securing vaccines to increasing public awareness of receiving them.
