Here’s a handy note: don’t make a police officer upset. It’ll get ugly.
Last Saturday, a police constable in Tawau was apparently so unhappy to find out that he was being transferred to another station that he decided to pick up a gun and the keys to a police vehicle and just drove off without authorisation.
Sabah police commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib said the constable, who is in his 30s, was arrested after he pulled over a mere 600m from the police station he had just left at 12.50am Saturday.
The arresting police officer who went after him found the constable crying beside the vehicle he took, with the pistol on its roof. The officer managed to calm the constable down before taking him and the seized vehicle and weapon back to the station.
“This is a serious case and he will be charged for stealing the police vehicle as well as the pistol,” said Comm Hamza, adding that the police department would be setting up an integrity unit to monitor staff attitude, work ethics and performance.
He said this was among the recent cases of policemen with disciplinary problems, and such cases would not be taken lightly.
Sabah CID chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Omar Mammah said investigations on the constable were still being carried out.
