A report has surfaced alleging that members of a Hamas operative cell trained in Malaysia to carry out flight operations into Israel.
In the Jerusalem Post, Yaakov Lappin reports that Hamas cell commander arrested by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) revealed under interrogation that members of his team had travelled to Malaysia in 2012 to train in the use of powered parachutes, which the militant group currently governing the bombarded Palestinian province of Gaza on the West Bank has been using to insert operatives into Israeli territory.
The Jerusalem Post reports that the suspect in custody told Shin Bet (the Israel Security Agency) that he and nine other Hamas members were sent to Malaysia to undergo traning with powered parachutes. The suspect said that he and his men were also trained – in other locations – to kidnap Israeli soldiers, prepare anti-tank missile ambushes, and sniper attacks on IDF ground forces.
The training these Hamas operatives received was ostensibly to prepare them for an IDF ground offensive in the Gaza Strip.
This follows local news reports that Malaysian militants have been travelling to the Middle East to participate in insurgent activity conducted by armed groups such as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), currently taking over and controlling large swathes of northwestern Iraq and Syria.
