Deputy Education Minister Assaulted

Deputy Education Minister P Kamalanathan was attacked at his parliamentary service centre in Hulu Selangor yesterday, allegedly over a request to transfer a teacher in Johor to the Hulu Selangor district.

The MIC and BN parliamentarian was holding a meeting with a group of Hulu Selangor UMNO Youth members, when he was struck on the neck by the assailant. His assailant is said to be an office bearer in the Hulu Selangor UMNO Youth.

The assault caused the programme to be cancelled.

The assault allegedly stems from a request made by the assailant’s family to transfer a relative, who is a teacher posted in Johor, to the Hulu Selangor district.

Kamalanathan later lodged a police report over the incident.

Kamalanathan has had a history of friction in his tenure as Deputy Education Minister; recently, he was warned by Malay rights group Perkasa that it will campaign against him in the next general elections over his remarks on the ritual slaughter of cattle in schools for Hari Raya Haji celebrations.
