Dengue cases are on a downward trend. Yay!

So long mosquitoes, and don’t ever come back!

According to a report by The New Straits Times, the Health Ministry said that nationwide dengue cases are on a downward trend from February to May this year.

Its director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham told the daily that 1,325 dengue cases were reported in Week 19 (8-14 May), compared to 1,329 cases the week before.

The number of deaths, according to Noor Hisham, were down too; only four cases were reported compared to seven the week before.

“Three of the cases were recorded in Selangor and one in Pahang,” he said in a statement.

Noor Hisham added that the number of dengue hotspots saw a reduction from 92 localities in the previous week to 75 localities in Selangor, Johor and Negri Sembilan, and outbreak areas also saw a 10.8% reduction.

But before you decide to celebrate by swimming in a swamp (nobody does that, right?), unfortunately there are also some bad news.

Noor Hisham said that seven states recorded a rise in dengue cases, including Kedah (88.9%), Sabah (50%), Perak (28.1%), Johor (25.2%), Kelantan (14.3%), Sarawak (12.7%), and Negri Sembilan (4.5%).

The total number of dengue cases reported from January to May stood at 46,856 cases –  an 8.6% increase compared to the same period last year.

But hey, baby steps. One day, we’ll get rid of them pesky aedes mosquitoes once and for all.
