Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) special operations director Bahri Mohd Zain, who had been spearheading the national graftbuster’s investigation into sovereign development fund 1MDB, has been transferred to the Prime Minister’s Department, with immediate effect, Malaysiakini reports.
During the course of his investigation into 1Malaysia Development Berhad, in particular the fund’s subsidiary SRC International Sdn Bhd, Bahri has been vocal on MACC’s commitment to uncovering the truth behind allegations of malfeasance within the company.
When the Royal Malaysian Police began detaining MACC officers attached to the investigation and raiding MACC offices in search of related documents, Bahri claimed that “hidden hands” were responsible for ordering the PDRM to crack down on the MACC.
Bahri was also quoted as saying in the wake of the PDRM crackdown, “By Allah I will hunt those responsible for these arrests to the ends of the earth. You may have some power, but I have God on my side.”
Also transferred to the PM’s Department today was MACC strategic communication director Rohaizad Yaakob, who earlier this week was photographed shaking hands with a delegation of Opposition politicians led by DAP’s Lim Kit Siang, PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, and Gabungan Harapan Baru founder Mat Sabu, as they visited the MACC office to offer their support in solidarity with the commission’s stated aim to investigate alleged 1MDB graft.
A source told Malaysiakini that the two directors were transferred due to “disciplinary issues”.
