DBKL is trying to make Brickfields a … “Blind City”

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is in discussions to make the Brickfields neighbourhood a “Blind City” – a somewhat awkward term for what is essentially a part of KL that will be friendly to those who are vision-impaired.

Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Mansor is tackling the issue following the Bukit Bintang Parliamentary Constituency Town Hall session today, when the issue of facilities for blind people in the area was brought up by a representative of the Malaysian Organisation for the Blind.

Brickfields’ Jalan Tebing is the home of the Malaysian Organisation of the Blind, which houses on its premises a number of vision-impaired people. They have become a fixture of Brickfields society, and the area has been equipped with tactile guided pathways for their ease of use.

The Sun Daily‘s Zaim Zamani reports that the organisation also asked the Federal Government to look into upgrading existing facilities, and to repair blind-friendly infrastructure that might have been damaged or made redundant during Brickfields’ rapid urban redevelopment.

“We will look and discuss about this issues and the idea to make Brickfields as a “Blind City” will also be one of the points in our discussion,” Tengku Adnan said.
