DBKL to spend RM92mil to upgrade flash flood mitigation system

After the abnormal flash floods which affected hundreds on 12 May, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has revealed that they will spend about RM92mil to upgrade the flash flood mitigation system in the city.

Federal Territories Deputy Minister Datuk Dr J. Loga Bala Mohan told The Star Online that the funds would be used to build retention ponds, install water pumps as well as replace old pipes and road diversion.

“This includes RM5mil for an integrated traffic management system to better handle the traffic during flash floods,” he was quoted as saying.

J. Loga also added that the 12 May flash floods was a freak act of nature due to “extraordinary rainfall which lasted for two hours”.

“A total of 106.5mm of rainfall was recorded in those hours when the usual is 70mm.

“The drains were unable to handle that volume of water,” he said.
