Dato’ Sheila Majid is popping off about the rising cost of living on Twitter

Malaysia’s long-serving, first lady of jazz and soul, Dato’ Sheila Majid has had enough, and she’s taken to Twitter to eloquently express herself under the duress of the site’s character limitations.

This afternoon, she wrote:

You know things are bad when the woman who’s enjoyed 30 years in the spotlight, openly admits to being able to hire maids and cooks to help her at home, and has toured the world, is willing to have some REAL TALK with her followers about the state of our collective finances.

The rising cost of living has been a hot topic among many Malaysians who are feeling the pinch in recent years, and are left wondering just how expensive petrol is going to get before someone decides to put a cap on it.

Viral images of restaurant bills have become de rigueur: RM100 for a plate of rice, four prawns and scant squid go viral, causing netizens to debate whether or not, as Malaysians, living in a country with ample coastline, a couple prawns a week should be a birthright, and not considered part of a luxurious lifestyle.

The 14th General Election is right around the corner. While the opposition is throwing out suggestions of fuel subsidies to curry favor with voters, a Singapore panel has already forecast that the number one issue dividing votes this time at the polls will be the cost of living. Your move, BN.

You know how much we love a bit of Twitter drama here at Coconuts KL. Welcome to the forum, Dato’ Sheila.
