Ever gone to a police station to report a crime, only to see that the person arrested was the one who told you about the crime in the first place? No? Probably not.
Meet Jeffrey Chew Gim Eam, Penang DAP committee member, and the gentleman tasked by the opposition coalition party to find malicious and untrue social media content directed towards them.
He diligently did his job, and after having found a minute-long video full of unfounded claims against the party, he reported it to his colleagues. City councilor Grace Teoh Koon Gee then went to police to lodged a report against the clip, who them promptly arrested Chew. The guy who reported it in the first place, not the person who made it, nor an individual who shared it.
Ah, we’re not entirely sure if this is how it’s supposed to work, guys.
Chew’s lawyer, RSN Rayer, is saying that instead of finding who was behind the video, police instead arrested his client, photographed him, fingerprinted him, took his mobile phone, and then only released him when he posted bail. Essentially, like a common criminal.
The clip at the center of the complaint alleges that a vote for the opposition is a vote for racist leaders from DAP, increased LGBTQ+ recognition, foreign meddling, and the removal of Bumiputera rights, oh – and the monarchy system.
So, basically everything bad, ever, including some George Soros for good measure. Who makes these things, and can we in any way get them to contribute to society positively?
Chew is still awaiting word on whether he will be charged with anything.
