Malaysia’s Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin ended yesterday’s COVID-19 speech from home with a naughty joke that prompted thousands to create all sorts of kinky fanfiction, while others were unamused at its inappropriate timing.

After telling Malaysians from the comfort of his home that the “worrying” new surge of infections in the country would not lead to a second nationwide lockdown, Muhyiddin, who is undergoing quarantine, ended the video telecast with a joke nobody expected (or wanted) to hear.

Maaflah jika Abah ini mula menggunakan rotan (Daddy’s sorry if he has to use his cane),” the 73-year-old said, referring to possible stricter measures that may be implemented to curb COVID-19 spread.

Abah (Daddy) is a nickname many Malaysians gave Muhyiddin after he began his tenure in March. His joke spawned a wide range of creative fiction – from plots where the character broke COVID SOPs to getting caned by “Yidin,” which is short for Muhyiddin.

The stories were mostly published to Twitter, but in a format inspired by the Wattpad online publishing platform popular for its kinky stories. They were tagged under “YidinXY/N.”

“She purposedly broke the SOPs, grinning as y/n knows what she’s in for,” a story by Twitter user @imanzulll read. “‘You naughty girl,’ said yidin while grabbing the cane that’s been kept for years in the closet.”

Others were not amused by the Prime Minister’s daddy jokes, implying that it was inappropriate and getting old.

“Come on, PM’s speechwriter. A 1 y.o. baby just died of Covid,” Twitter user @Faizalhamssin said. “Case count reached all-time high time today. People are angry, anxious, afraid. So much uncertainty over the future. This isn’t the time for your Abah joke. It’s getting old.”

Another said: “Today, a one-year old baby died from COVID-19 and there are 691 new infections. Also today, our Prime Minister called himself ‘abah’ and joked about needing to ‘rotan’ us during a national address on the COVID-19 crisis. We need to do better than this.”

Malaysia recorded the highest daily increase of 691 cases yesterday, bringing the total number of known infections to 13,504. Another 141 deaths were also recorded, including a baby from Sabah’s Semporna. The one-year-old is by far Malaysia’s youngest COVID-19 victim.
