A crowded mall in Kuala Lumpur’s Cheras neighborhood was the scene of a heist worth more than RM1.5 million (US$370,000) after 10 robbers targeted a Poh Kong jewelry shop on New Year’s Eve.
Cheras Leisure Mall shoppers watched on in disbelief as the men entered the shop at 8:30pm, wearing face helmets, visors and gloves. They then proceeded to furiously break the glass displays with sledgehammers, subduing the store security guard and five attending employees with a shotgun.
The robbery took less than three minutes, with the men then fleeing the Taman Segar mall on motorbike. Five accomplices stood guard outside a mall entrance throughout the incident. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.
Police are now reviewing CCTV footage in order to piece together the events leading up to, and after, the robbery. They have added that investigators have gathered evidence such as cigarette butts at the shopping mall entrance, that could be linked to the case.
With an in-depth knowledge of the working plot lines of both CSI and Law & Order: SVU, Coconuts KL understands that while DNA from the filters could be gathered, the evidence would be inadmissible considering those Sampoernas could have been smoked at any time before the incident.
