If you thought we were on the brink of societal chaos and upheaval, with riots in the streets and police cars on fire, chill. Bernama’s put out a report assuring us that come what may, at least the cost of breakfast in KL and around the country is still “reasonable”.
A random survey by the national news agency found that despite rising costs of essentials such as fuel, sugar and electricity tariffs, many street vendors in and around Kuala Lumpur have not raised the prices of their breakfast meals by a significant amount.
Restoran Ala Kampung in Pandan Utama, for instance, still charges RM1.50 for a basic packet of nasi lemak, with add-ons bringing up the price of a plate to RM2.50 – RM4.50. Teh tarik and the ‘O’ are still priced at the usual RM1.20 and RM1, respectively. A roti canai has gone up from 80 sen to 90 sen each.
A kueh vendor in Gombak has raised his prices from RM1 for three pieces of kueh to RM1.20 for the same amount.
Sawiyah Zaini, a food hawker in Ampang says, “I don’t earn much profit because I realise that if I charge too highly, customers would stay away.”
To save on expenses, still others are opting to have their breakfast at home before the long slog through morning traffic, although time constraints do not always make that a viable option.
