UPDATE: Selangor police confirmed to Malay Mail today that the court application to exhume the body of Nazrin Hassan, CEO of Cradle Fund, came at the request of the victim’s older brother.

Investigations into the June death of Nazrin Hassan, CEO of Cradle Fund, have taken another turn, with Petaling Jaya courts giving the go-ahead for police to re-exhume his body.

Initially believed to have been an accident involving an exploding mobile phone and subsequent fire, police later launched a murder inquiry after traces of petrol were allegedly found on the victim’s body.

Bernama writes that the Magistrates Court gave approval after his family applied to perform a second autopsy on the body. Nazrin’s remains are reportedly set to be re-exhumed next Monday.

Nazrin’s relatives were present at the Petaling Jaya Court Complex this morning during the proceedings.

The Cradle CEO’s June 14 death shocked the start-up community, where Nazrin was a much-loved figure. Police reclassified the case as murder in August, and later arrested Nazrin’s wife, her first husband, their two teen sons for questioning, as well as the victim’s brother-in-law and sister-in-law. All parties were later released without charge.

Twists and turns in the case have kept it in the headlines over the last few months, which each development proving to be more surprising than the last. However, police have yet to divulge details regarding why Nazrin’s widow, Samirah Muzaffar, and her family have been arrested, nor what the motive would have been if it were indeed a murder.

In response to the sensationalized headlines, Samirah wrote a lengthy statement in August to the media and public, maintaining that initial autopsy reports were consistent with injuries sustained from an exploding phone, and asking for transparency in the case’s investigations.

Editor’s Note: An earlier version had attributed the request to police; however, new developments clarified it was the victim’s family who called for a second autopsy.
