A married couple who had been living under a bridge in Segamat, Johor have been relocated to a rented room in town.
The unnamed couple, aged 35 and 30 respectively, were found living in a makeshift home under the bridge in Kampung Sedeng and next to a river for an unspecified period of time, a viral video of them showed. The Social Welfare Department of Malaysia, or JKM, has since reached out to the couple and found them a place to live.
“We agreed to rent a room located on the top floor of a shop building in Bandar Segamat, with the approval of the building owner,” Segamat District Social Welfare Officer Mohamad Kamil Helmi Mohd Pang told reporters on Sunday. “Alhamdulillah, yesterday we managed to bring this couple in and provide them with necessities, such as mats, blankets and mattresses.”
The new home is said to be located near their workplace. The duo will also receive monthly financial aid worth RM300 (around US$70) for a year, according to Mohamad Kamil.
“It is understood that up till today, the duo has been running a small soya bean business,” he added. He did not say how much the rent would cost the couple.
A video that has been widely circulated online showed a group of people being led to a bridge to find the couple’s residence covered with large cloths and wooden sticks.
